We need the support of at least 25 members of Congress to help free Indonesian prisoner of conscience, Filep Karma. However, the clock is ticking before they break for August recess. Ask your member of Congress to help free Filep!
Dear Rector,
Hopefully you’ve heard the spectacular news by now – political activist Yusak Pakage has been released from prison in Indonesia!
While we welcome this great news, fellow prisoner of conscience Filep Karma remains behind bars. These two men were sentenced to long prison terms for the peaceful display of the Morning Star flag, a symbol of Papuan independence.
Upon his release, Yusak expressed warm thanks to supporters, like you, for the work on his case. Now we’re gearing up again to ensure that Filep’s freedom is to soon follow.
Our members of Congress have also been playing a vital role in helping to shine a light on Filep and Yusak’s case.
In fact, 11 representatives have already co-sponsored the resolution which seeks the release of Filep and other prisoners of conscience in Indonesia.
But we need more support. The resolution must gather at least 25 signatures – 10 from the House Foreign Relations Committee – to make it viable.
Filep is suffering from untreated medical problems. He was finally cleared for travel to Jakarta for treatment, but the Indonesian authorities have repeatedly delayed his urgent medical care.
Also adding to the mounting pressure is the fact that Congress is about to break for summer. If we don’t act now, we’ll lose valuable momentum for getting the resolution passed this year.
We’ve come too far and freedom for Filep is so close. But we need you to contact your members of Congress and let them know that freedom – and possibly Filep’s life – are on the line.
