What Congress did for women yesterday in USA

Stop violence against women with your gift to Amnesty today.
One bill for women’s rights passed, one more to go. Help us make valuing women a priority.
Stop violence against women with your gift to Amnesty today.

Dear Rector,

Two bills aiming to stop violence against women are closer than ever to becoming law.

Yesterday, Congress voted to pass provisions of the Tribal Law and Order Act, a groundbreaking bill that fights sexual violence and rape against Native American and Alaska Native women.Without your support – from the prolonged advocacy over the years to that last wave of phone calls and messages that poured into Congressional offices this past week – we couldn’t have seen such a major success. Thank you.

Next step – the bill goes to President Obama’s desk to officially be signed into law!
Another bill making its way through Congress, the International Violence Against Women Act (IVAWA), is an unprecedented effort by the United States to address violence against women globally. However, IVAWA has not yet reached the House or the Senate floor and is still in need of your support.

Now that the Tribal Law and Order Act has opened a door for women's rights, we’re ready to carry IVAWA through to victory! Amnesty members have fought for years to get both bills to this critical point, and it appears we are on the cusp of success. But you know us, we don’t settle for almost there.

Help Amnesty take both bills through the final stretch with your financial support today.

Both bills are deeply necessary for combating what has been described as the most pervasive abuse of human rights in the world – violence against women. At least one out of every three women worldwide has been beaten, coerced into sex, or otherwise abused in her lifetime, with rates of domestic violence reaching 70% in some countries. Amnesty played a major role in crafting language for both pieces of legislation. With your donation today we will continue to make protecting and valuing women a priority. For our mothers, daughters, wives, sisters and selves, let’s make women’s rights a reality. Click here to make an immediate donation to Amnesty USA to help end senseless acts of violence and abuse against women.

Thank you for heeding our call to action.

Sincerely,

The Stop Violence against Women team
